Electromagnetic EM61 Cable-coil Array

This cabled-coil array was originally designed to be used on paved roads to map manhole and utility covers. It is comprised of a cabled transmitting coil and two cabled receiving coils. All are wired into a junction box that connects to a standard Geonics EM61  console.

The coils for this array were built by Geonics and never used except for testing. The huge advantage of this configuration is that you can deploy a two-coil receiver array with only one EM61 console. A similar array using traditional hard fiberglass coils requires two consoles each driving a set of transmitting and receiving coils. This configuration cuts the capital costs in half and works just as well.

When paired with a standard EM61 console, the acquisition speed and depth of exploration are exactly that of a standard EM61. This is an ideal configuration for utility mapping. We also have a specially-modified EM61 console which has been set up for higher frequency acquistion speed. This console will allow the array to be deployed at speeds up to 30 mph, but with depth of investigations of approximately 12-16", depending on the target. This console is available for $6,000.00 and the software for high-speed acquisition is available from Geomar.
