Nicholl_(1) ***In Memoriam***

John J. Nicholl, Jr.

"URS Colorado lost a dear friend and colleague with the recent passing of John J. Nicholl, Jr.

John was a Senior Consulting Geophysical Engineer for the Denver office and worked tirelessly for URS and its legacy company, Woodward-Clyde for more than 25 years.

John dedicated his distinguished career to environmental and engineering geophysics, site investigations, geotechnical assessments, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) projects.  He was an active leader in many professional organizations and served as a board member in various capacities. John was President of the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS) for several terms and won their most prestigious honor, the Gold Medal Award for his exceptional contributions to the engineering and environmental geophysics community and to EEGS.  John was also Co-Chairman of the Colorado Earthquake Hazards Mitigation Council and was a respected member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), the Seismological Society of America (SSA), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

A native of the Denver metro area, John completed both his BS in Geophysical Engineering and Graduate Studies in Geophysics and Seismology at Colorado School of Mines.  He was a registered Professional Geologist (PG) in Wyoming and Tennessee.

He was an avid collector of antique bottles, a passion instilled in young John by his father, who spent many weekends with his son digging for antique bottles in abandoned mine sites and ghost towns.  In addition to bottles, John had outstanding collections of wine and bourbon whiskey.  John was well-known to his colleagues at URS for his indefatigable sense of humor, his candid and honest opinions, and his laid-back, team-oriented professional style.  He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

John is survived by his daughter, Hillary Nicholl and brother, David Nicholl.

A memorial service for John will be held at the South Fellowship Church Worship Center, 6560 S. Broadway, Littleton, CO 80121 on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM."
